Overview
The MacPherson Institute is pleased to offer the Educator Enhancement Program leading to two Certificates of Completion for Faculty and Instructors at McMaster University.
This program offered by the MacPherson Institute is designed to allow McMaster University educators to improve and enhance their teaching and learning practices in ways that are responsive and flexible to their own needs and interests. Participants in the program will select the seminar and topics and practicum options that are most relevant to their development.
The program components are designed in such a way that they encourage participants to consider the courses they teach, and identify changes that can improve learning, increase retention, and the enrich the student experience.

In order to meet the varying needs of McMaster instructors, we have created two Certificates of Completion, which are described below.
Foundational Educator Enhancement– Certificate of Completion
To earn this certificate of completion, participants are required to:
- Attend FIVE (5) seminar topics
- Submit FIVE (5) reflective assignments, one for each seminar series attended, to be submitted within THREE (3) weeks of completing the seminar
- Complete the Foundational Capstone Portfolio Seminar
- Submit the Foundational Capstone Portfolio
Advanced Educator Enhancement– Certificate of Completion
To earn this certificate of completion, participants are required to
- Have completed and been awarded the Foundational Educator Enhancement– Certificate of Completion
- Attend THREE (3) additional seminar topics with reflective assignments
- Attend and complete one Advanced Practicum Opportunity
- Complete the Advanced Capstone Portfolio Seminar
- Submit the Advanced Capstone Portfolio
1 It is not mandatory for participants to attend all three sessions of the seminar; it is, however, necessary to attend the first session if they wish to attend the second or third sessions. Generally, completion of all three sessions is required to apply the seminar toward a certificate of completion.
Instructional Skills Workshops (ISW)
The ISW is designed to enhance the teaching effectiveness of both new and experienced educators. Participants review basic ideas about teaching, check current practices, and try new strategies and techniques. During the 3-day workshop, participants design and conduct three “mini-lessons” and receive verbal, written and video feedback from other workshop participants. This workshop is 24 hours over 3 days.

Course (re)Design Seminar (CrDS)
The Course (re)Design Seminar aims to engage and support academic staff in the design or redesign a course. The Seminar includes facilitated sessions on course design topics, including constructive alignment, learning outcomes, and assessment; the Seminar also includes dedicated time for individual work and/or peer feedback and/or consultation time. This workshop is 16-24 hours over 3 days.

Assessment Development Workshop (ADW)
Come develop a new or existing assessment for your course. We’ll rubrics, assessing group
work, and more! This workshop helps instructors implement meaningful assessments that
support student learning.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Project or Independent Project
Participants will engage in a self-directed study on a teaching and learning topic of their choice, selecting either a project with a research focus (e.g., literature review, research proposal, grant proposal), or an applied focus (e.g., develop and distribute a resource). The work will be supported via consultations and feedback from a MacPherson Institute Educational Developer and may involve consolation with the McMaster library personal such as the Research and Advanced Studies Librarian. Participants will be expected to identify a venue through which they will share their work.
Participants in the program will select the seminars and practicum opportunities that are most relevant to their development. The program components are designed in such a way that encourage participants to consider the courses they teach and identify changes that can improve learning, increase retention and enrich the student experience.

Creating accessible teaching and learning environments is an important aspect of equitable and student-centred pedagogy. In this seminar we will discuss approaches to accessibility and accommodation, consider how principles of universal design might be applied to your to teaching contexts, and exchange ideas with other instructors.

Interested in integrating experiential learning (EL) into your teaching but have questions such as: How do I add EL to my course? How do I assess learning through reflection? How do I write good reflection questions? Join this seminar to gain a deeper understanding of experiential learning and how to assess students’ higher-order learning through critical reflection as High Impact Practice (HIP). Seminar Description
Increasing international political and ideological polarization has revived questions about academic freedom and freedom of expression in Canadian universities. This seminar provides an overview of how these issues apply to the McMaster context and suggests strategies for teaching topics that may elicit strong responses or contentious opinions from students. In particular, we will consider instructional techniques for encouraging students to explore unexamined assumptions, for using the tools of their disciplines to engage with each other as intellectual peers, and for creating classroom spaces that balance inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge with the institutional and pedagogical responsibility to provide a safe and secure learning environment.

Intended Learning Outcomes
By end of this seminar, you will:
- Describe the purpose and components of a teaching portfolio;
- Familiarize yourself with policy SPS B2, which outlines McMaster’s portfolio structure requirements;
- Reflect on the underlying values that shape your teaching;
- Create a draft of your teaching philosophy and obtain feedback from your peers;
- Create a framework or outline for your teaching portfolio;
List your existing evidence and identify ways you could strengthen your portfolio.

Seminar Description
Online video accounts for 74% of all online traffic. Video is increasingly a part of our everyday lives, both in and out of the classroom. Using basic principles taught by seasoned professionals, this workshop will explore simple tools and techniques to create engaging videos. No experience necessary. Requires access to a phone with a camera and a laptop.
