Generative AI (GenAI) has created complex and, at times, challenging circumstances in teaching and learning. Conversations about its role in education may feel daunting, particularly when instructors and students hold differing perspectives, classes are large, or trust has been strained by concerns about GenAI use in assessment. While there may be value in opening a dialogue with students, there may also be times when the circumstances or timing make this difficult.
You don’t have to be an expert in GenAI to have a meaningful conversation with your students. You already bring expertise in how learning happens within your discipline; keeping student learning at the heart of the conversation can provide a useful starting point. Drawing on experiences working alongside instructors, this guide is intended to support thoughtful, open, and productive conversations about GenAI and learning. We recognize that these may not be easy conversations, but they are important ones. Thank you for being willing to have these conversations with your students.
A conversation about GenAI can help make expectations more transparent, surface students’ questions and concerns, and build a shared understanding of the role of GenAI in students’ learning. It creates an opportunity to connect the use of GenAI to the goals and values of your course and discipline, rather than treating it solely as a question of “permitted” or “prohibited.” If you are a sessional instructor or new to teaching in your department, you may wish to speak to some colleagues about disciplinary or department norms/values of GenAI.
Just as importantly, an open conversation can help foster trust and support students in developing their own critical perspectives on these evolving technologies. It also creates a space for instructors to convey and be transparent on the use or non-use of GenAI in their own teaching. If you feel uncomfortable having this conversation with your students on your own, you may consider inviting a trusted colleague to help facilitate the conversation.
Before beginning a conversation with students, take some time to consider the context in which it will take place. Reflect on your own beliefs and assumptions about GenAI, the values and expectations of your department or program and the university, and the norms and practices of your discipline or field. Considering these perspectives alongside what you know about your students can help you clarify your purpose, anticipate different viewpoints, and approach the conversation with greater intention.
Take a moment to reflect on your own perspectives and assumptions about GenAI. Being aware of how you feel – whether enthusiastic, concerned, or somewhere in between – can help you consider the ways your position might shape the conversation and how students may comfortably and openly respond.

Having a clear purpose can help shape the conversation and help students understand why it matters.
Reflect on the values and norms of your department, school, program, and discipline. Consider how knowledge is normally created and assessed in your field, and how GenAI may support or challenge these practices. Acknowledging that expectations differ across disciplines and Faculties can help provide important context for students.
Your conversation with your students should be informed by McMaster’s Guidelines on the Use of Generative AI in Teaching and Learning. Our guidelines point out that university-level learning is intended to be focused on the process of learning as opposed to the product. You may encourage your students to read these guidelines as a foundation for your conversation and to deepen their GenAI literacy.
Students may already have beliefs, experiences, and informal norms around GenAI based on previous courses or personal use. If you have observed patterns of GenAI use in your courses, consider how these insights might help shape a conversation that is relevant and responsive to students’ experiences.
How you frame the conversation – to your students, but also for yourself! – can significantly impact its direction and tenor. For this reason, we recommend centering the shared concern of your students’ learning experience, or learning in your discipline more generally, in the discussion.
You may wish to consider some of the tips below to keep the focus of the conversation on mutual care for student learning as you are preparing to facilitate the discussion:
Note: Having a conversation about GenAI with your students does not obligate you to change your course policies – or your mind – about GenAI, but we encourage you to be open to adapting as you learn from the conversation.
Open a dialogue with students to understand their perspectives on GenAI, how they’re engaging with GenAI, and to build shared expectations together. One prompt woven into a discussion may be enough, or you might choose to cover a few of them in a single session. Conversations can take place at the start of the course or spread across different points in the term. Treat these questions as a foundation that can be adapted to your own goals, contexts, and course.
Below are some sample questions you may consider posing to your students to begin the conversation. Depending on your facilitation approach and the engagement in your class, you can likely discuss 3-4 questions in 10 to 15 minutes.
Students bring a wide range of learning experiences and attitudes toward GenAI into the classroom. Many students are still forming and shifting their outlook and opinions. Creating space for this diversity can help students engage more critically with their usage of these tools. Some strategies that can help are:
The format and approach to facilitating a conversation with students about GenAI will vary depending on the size of your class or year of study. Consider:
If you are teaching a large course that is coordinated, discussing an approach to facilitating a conversation with students across multiple sections may require additional planning with the broader teaching team.
How disciplines are adapting to GenAI – in terms of norms, practices, and perspectives – varies widely and is still evolving. It can be helpful to engage students in conversation about the disciplinary nuances of GenAI within your respective field, particularly where there might be a range of positions and perspectives. Consider asking students additional discipline-specific questions, such as:
The long-term impacts of GenAI on student development are not yet fully understood. Research in this area is still emerging alongside the technology itself. Early evidence points to a mixed picture. On one hand, it can act as a useful learning tool to clarify concepts or explore ideas. On the other hand, it raises concerns about cognitive offloading, where relying on GenAI to complete a task can come at the cost of the deeper, more effortful thinking that leads to lasting learning and a reduction in foundational skills. Sharing this nuance with students, rather than a simple “helpful” or “harmful” verdict, can help them make more informed choices about when and how to use these tools in their own learning.
If students seem reluctant to engage in the conversation, you might consider some added instructional techniques that can help with student engagement including:
Consider providing an anonymous way for students to respond to conversation prompts using an online poll, form, or survey tool. This can be particularly useful if students have differing perspectives from the instructor and/or their peers and are concerned about identifying themselves or disclosing how they are currently using GenAI tools. Dedicating class time to complete a survey or poll can also encourage participation. Moreover, providing time for self-reflection primes students for short, in-class group discussions.
Consider involving TAs and other teaching team members as co-facilitators and participants. Their close contact with students may provide insights into GenAI use that are less visible to instructors. Sharing perspectives can model openness, support diverse viewpoints, and help ensure course expectations are applied consistently.
If a conversation becomes tense, name what you’re noticing and check in with the room. Validate students’ concerns, even when you don’t have a full answer. If the discussion becomes heated or unproductive, pause the discussion and commit to returning to it later. Summarizing the key “pain points” can help the group feel heard and bring some closure even if the issue isn’t fully resolved. If comments become disrespectful or offensive, intervene directly and reiterate the expectations for respectful dialogue.
Remember that students are navigating a GenAI landscape that is still relatively new, along with a range of institutional expectations and course policies. If a student is struggling to make sense of it all, pointing students to institutional resources could be helpful for diffusing tensions. After the conversation, take time to reflect on what students have said and how you will communicate what you heard back to them (e.g., a verbal recap in class, announcement on your Avenue to Learn page, etc.). Identify to students what it is that you will take away from your conversation as their instructor and discuss how student feedback will inform your teaching or course design. Not every conversation will amount to a change in your teaching or course, but because of your dialogue with students, you might consider:
